SINHARAJA RAIN FOREST
Sinharaja is one of the largest distributed and biologically unique lowland rain forest in Sri Lanka. It is a national park and a biodiversity hotspot in Sri Lanka. It is of international significance and has been designed by UNESCO. This rainforest covers an extent of about 11187 hectares in the southwest lowland wet zone of Sri Lanka in the district of Rathnapura.
The vegetation of Sinharaja forest is evergreen forest type with high degree of endemism. Out of the 221 woody trees so far identified within the reserve 139 are endemic. Out of 25 general endemic to Sri Lanka 13 are represented in Sinharaja forest.
There is a high degree of endemism among the butterflies, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals are greater than 50%. the most common deer species are the Sambhur. The monk deer and Barkingdeer are also found within the reserve. 72% were resident non endemic and 13% migrants.
